wine tasting

Maury_1 Frankly I still know nothing about wine.

I know a lady who is a wine trader.  She organizes some wine tasting events from time to time.  Last week I joined a "French wine, cheeses, chocoloate pairing" seminor she hosted (you can tell, the reason why I chose this one was because of the cheeses and chocolcates!!).

It was interesting (from eating and drinking perspective, haha) but I didn’t really get much as there were so many names that were new to me.  I thought I knew a few names but then what I knew were probably 10% of what she mentioned.  I guess the rules of thumb (on pairing) are:

1. to match the place of origin, e.g. wine from Provence matching with cheese from Provence (if you know where the cheese is from…);

2. milder wine to match with milder cheese (and vice versa).

These are the pairs that I liked most:

- Chateau de Plassan 1re Cotes de Bordeaux 2002 (don’t really know much from the name… except it is from Bordeaux right?) matched with Colommiers

- Maury (a dessert wine) matched with hazelnut chocolates.

My friend suggested we should take a course on wine 101 first, in order to appreciate the wine that we tried.  :p

    haha..my wine knowledge has been improved 400% when I came here as everyone orders wine before dinner. Last Friday, when I had dinner at Tonys Lord Nelson (famous steak house at Auckland), I also ordered a glass of red wine, which is a bottle of Villa Maria Private Bin Merlot 2005, 100% NZ wine and it is very good and cheap. Also, have my 1st Port wine experience which turns out to be pretty nice. It has high alcohol concentration and only can serve in small glass with cheese when dinner is finished. Though could not have much alcohol, but find that is quite interesting to mix different food with differet reds. Let’s try more in Hong Kong!
